The Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM) was established in 1904 and was registered as a Society under Societies Registration Act, 1860 with a registration number SR 1 of 1980-1981 with its registered office at Serkawn, Lunglei District of Mizoram. Under the Baptist Church of Mizoram another branch named Baptist Church Orphanage (BCO) was again established to provide free services to the poorer community children who were orphaned due to death by their father or mother or both without any distinctions on grounds of sex, belief, colour or creed. BCO is a gain registered under the state government of Mizoram under Social Welfare Department with a registration no.3 of 2010/GOM/SWD as an orphanage with non-profit community based organization in Lunglei district of Mizoram. Since its inception it has a record of supporting more than 1000 vulnerable children from the area. The orphanage is also registered as a Special Adoption Center under the government of India.
The Baptist Church of Mizoram’s BCO’s objectives majorly include; establishment of a home for the orphans and their foster mothers to provide care and services in the home, providing immediate needs and other timely needs of orphans and nurturing sick and malnourished orphan children for better health and keep them well and strong through child survival program. Children constitute large percentage of population in Mizoram and the orphans or vulnerable children need to grow up in a family environment and in an atmosphere of happiness, love, guidance and understanding. From the present fast growing development systems vulnerable children require care in regard to physical, mental, moral and social development. In many situations, low levels of education among the poorer population of the community has also been attributed to the increasing number of orphan children as a result of extreme poverty and poor health conditions.
Baptist Church Orphanage was started by a team of dedicated persons with the aim of helping the children affected by death of a father, mother or both, extreme poverty and ignorance. It was started in the year 1916 and was handed over to the BCM in 1966 as a result of political unrest in Mizoram that affects the day to day management of the programme. Therefore the Baptist Church of Mizoram takes full responsibility of the orphanage since then. Finally it was registered as an organisation under the Mizoram state government with a registration no.3 of 2010/GOM/SWD as an orphanage with non-profit community based organization in Lunglei district of Mizoram.
The Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), from its member contribution is committed to provide minimum support that will provide children with a safe and stable home, education and support throughout their childhood from 0-6 years of age. This will be a solution of solving the problems hidden by the fact that orphans and vulnerable children are invisible; yet by the very nature of their situation, they are included among those that are classified as disadvantaged and poor in India. In Lunglei district like any other areas of the world, there is growing number of orphans and homeless children caused by HIV/AIDS, ill health and extreme poverty. In addition to this, some orphans have no close relatives or no trace of their family to place them back for continued family support. As a result the BCM is willing to act as a Special Adoption Center for the region, accordingly willingness has also been signed and the government decision is awaited.
To provide care and support and mobilize resources for addressing the challenges facing orphans (children of abandoned, motherless or fatherless or both and victimized by extreme poverty) and enable them realize their full potential through promoting programmes on survival, education, health care, recreational, social security and moral support for social and economic sustainability.
